Tips for Recovering from Oral Surgery

Tips for Recovering from Oral Surgery from Premier Oral Surgery & Implantology Center in Stratford, CTOral surgery can address various dental issues, providing relief and preventing further complications from impeding oral health. While people may not always be eager to go through surgery, it can be the most effective option for treatment. Here are a few tips to help the recovery period run smoothly.

An oral surgeon’s tips for an easy recovery

Prioritize rest

One of the most important things to remember with oral surgery is prioritizing rest. Set aside a few days after the procedure to rest and recover. That may mean using sick days at work, taking time off school, or having a partner or loved one help with childcare. The patient should get plenty of sleep and, when awake, take it easy to promote healing. In the days immediately after oral surgery, avoid exercise and other strenuous activities.

Oral surgeons typically recommend that patients have someone they trust to look after them in the days following the procedure. They can help prepare food, pick up pain medication and antibiotics, and remind the patient to take said medications. Note that if the patient will be put under general anesthesia, they will also need a ride home from the office.

Take medication as directed

Depending on the type of oral surgery, an oral surgeon may prescribe pain medication to reduce discomfort in the following days. Take these medications only as directed. Patients can also ask the oral surgeon about over-the-counter medications like ibuprofen and acetaminophen.

In addition, an oral surgeon may prescribe antibiotics to fight off infection. The patient must take the entire course of antibiotics, often continuing to take them after feeling better to complete the course. There is a risk of antibiotic-resistant infection should the patient stop in the middle of a course.

Ice the area as needed

Icing the area intermittently during the first 24 to 48 hours, usually outside the mouth (cheeks and jaw), can reduce inflammation. This both facilitates healing and improves patient comfort. It can also make bruising less likely.

Clean the area

The oral surgeon will provide detailed instructions on how to keep the surgical site clean as it heals. Right after oral surgery, cleaning the area will likely be done by gently rinsing it instead of brushing it. Then, as the patient heals, they may slowly transition back to regular brushing. This helps the area heal without encountering issues such as infection, irritation, and prolonged bleeding.

Do not rush recovery

Finally, taking time to heal will make for a smoother recovery. While it may be tempting to cut back on rest, especially when the patient starts to feel better, doing too much too early on can set a patient back. With time and patience (and the tips above), the surgical site should heal with little to no problems.
